Did the French women who had relationships with the SS during the war go to Germany after it ended in 1945?
You guys know that famous old photo of the lady with the shaved head holding a baby while people are yelling at her? Well her name was Simone Touseau and she was only 23 years old when this happened in a city called Chartres. It’s a really sad story because she worked as a translator for the Germans and she ended up falling in love with an SS soldier. The baby she is holding in the picture was actually his.
When the Nazi finally left and the city was free the local people were so angry and they wanted revenge. They grabbed her and dragged her out into the street and shaved all her hair off to make her feel ashamed. Then they made her walk through the crowd while everyone called her a traitor.
I saw some people asking if these women went to Germany after the war. Some of them who were really close to the Nazis did run away in 1944 to a place called Sigmaringen. But when the war officially ended in 1945 most of them got caught and sent back to France to go to jail anyway.
Most of the women like Simone stayed in France though because they didn’t think their own neighbors would be so mean to them. The worst part is that the kids, like the baby in the photo, had a really hard life for a long time. People called them children of the enemy even though it was not their fault. It took a really long time for people to start being nice to them again.
