So I have just read the true story behind that single most famous image of the vietnam war and I am literally terrified. The little girl at the center is called phan thi kim phuc and she was just nine. Her village trang bang was struck with napalm which is similar to this awful liquid that clings to all things and burns. The case was in fact a complete accident by a south vietnamese aircraft which struck civilians rather than the soldiers. She had to tear off her clothes as they were on fire and she was merely running along the road screaming. it is so heartbreaking.
She survived and was able to get 17 surgeries and spent more than a year in the hospital. She lives in canada and she is a grand mother. She also founded the “KIM Foundation International” to assist other children who fall in war. And get this she and nick ut are still best friends. it is a crazier story than it was originally that which began as a literal nightmare but ended as the tale of how kind people could be.
