What is Fabric Thickness?

Fabric thickness refers to the depth or height of a piece of fabric, usually measured in millimeters (mm). It’s influenced by the fabric’s weight and the density of the material.

How to Convert Fabric Weight to Thickness

To estimate fabric thickness, you need to know:

  • Fabric weight (in GSM or oz/yd²)
  • Material density (in grams per cubic centimeter)

Formula:
Thickness (mm) = GSM ÷ (Density × 1000)

If weight is in oz/yd², convert it to GSM first:
1 oz/yd² = 33.906 GSM (or divide by 0.0294935)

Example Table (Assuming Density = 0.95 g/cm³)

Weight (GSM) Thickness (mm)
1000.105
1500.158
2000.211
2500.263
3000.316
