TPI/TPC to Stretchability
What is Thread Density and Stretchability?
Thread Density refers to the number of threads per inch (TPI) or per centimeter (TPC) in a fabric. Higher density means the fabric is tighter and usually less stretchable.
Stretchability is how much a fabric can stretch under tension. Lower thread density usually increases stretch.
How to Estimate Stretch from Thread Density
Stretchability is roughly estimated as:
Stretch (%) = 100 – (TPI ÷ 200) × 100
Example:
TPI = 100 → Stretch = 100 – (100/200) × 100 = 50%
Thread Density to Fabric Stretchability Table
| Thread Density (TPI/TPC) | Estimated Stretchability (%) |
|---|---|
| 50 | 75% |
| 100 | 50% |
| 120 | 40% |
| 150 | 25% |
| 180 | 10% |
| 200 | 0% |
