What is Standard Air Density?

Standard air density is the density of air under International Standard Atmosphere (ISA) conditions, typically used in aviation, engineering, and meteorology. It represents air at sea level, 15°C temperature, and 101.325 kPa pressure.

How to Calculate:

The calculation is based on the ideal gas law. Under standard conditions, the values for pressure and temperature are known and constant, allowing for a simple formula.

Formula:

ρ = P / (R × T)

  • ρ = Air density (kg/m³)
  • P = Pressure (Pa) = 101325
  • R = Specific gas constant for dry air ≈ 287.058 J/kg·K
  • T = Temperature (K) = 288.15

Plugging in standard values gives ρ ≈ 1.225 kg/m³.
